People come into your life for different seasons and different reasons.
And then there are those who arrive at exactly the right time, and quietly change the trajectory of your life.
Recently, while doing some research, I came across a piece of material created by my mentor and good friend, Ron Huntington. That single moment sent me straight down memory lane.
About 20 years ago, as a brand-new business coach, I had the privilege of working alongside Ron, leading business workshops in Seattle twice a year. Those experiences shaped me in ways I still carry today.
I remember staying at Ron’s house the night before workshops, him knocking on my bedroom door at 5:00 a.m. to make sure I was up and ready to go by 6:00 sharp. I remember late-night conversations with Ron and his wife, Evie, about life and leadership. And I still smile thinking about celebratory chocolate milkshakes at Red Robin after long workshop days.
Ron was the mentor who taught me how to run a business workshop with discipline, precision, and grit:
• Be in the room for setup at 6:30 a.m. sharp
• Execute with clarity and confidence
• Recover gracefully when you forget your script
• And yes… eliminate filler words (apparently I used “right” more than 40 times in one day)
Last Thursday, I found myself passing through downtown Seattle on my way to visit my daughter, who lives just north of the city. I realized Ron’s house was right there on Capitol Hill. I reached out, and luck was on my side.
We spent a couple of hours catching up on life, business, and those classic “back in the day” stories. It felt like no time had passed at all. And as a bonus, I got to meet his granddaughter, who proudly demonstrated her stair-jumping skills while singing in a princess dress. 😊
Ron Huntington, thank you for the investment you made in me, the lessons that still guide my work today, and the friendship that continues after all these years. I promise not to let so much time pass before we connect again.
And who knows… maybe it’s time for another workshop in Seattle.
I have a feeling we’d crush it. 💪
